Gender Studies

Description: Analysis of reality and its representation using gender as a transdisciplinary analytical category that starts from the inequalities between men and women and refers to the traits and roles attributed to each sex in each historical moment and in each society. Gender relations are studied in different areas: literature, language, education, new technologies, media, urban planning and spatial planning, economy, history, etc.

Social and Economic Territorial Transformations

Description: Social and economic changes in nowadays society are closely related to land. This research line focusses on the study of different territorial scenarios of our present society within the framework of economic re-structuration and globalization. Hence, these territorial effects that are engendered in the behaviour of human activities will be analysed on divers eleves, from the local to the global.

Land Use Planning,  Urbanization Processes and Urban Planning

Description: Analysis of the elements that configure territories, from the broadest areas to specific urban spaces and the policies herein applied. Urban space and territory are understood as a spatial expression of economic, social, cultural and ecological policies of society. The objectives are quite diverse and so, the following should be highlighted: Socio-economic development, improvement in the quality of life, responsible management of natural and heritage resources, environment protection, or the rational and responsible use of land.

Urban Policies, Development and Social Change

Description: This line of research explores urban policies related to the main aspects that condition the society wherein they are applied, especially in aspects such as economic development  and social cohesion. On the one hand, it focuses on social and economic innovation, improvement in the living conditions of its community and processes of social inclusion in urban areas. On the other hand, it focuses on the relationship between social conflict, urban morphology and criminal activities; it also looks into policies for the control of space in relationship with social marginality and its location in the city.

Historical Geography

Description:This line of research explores land transformation from a historical perspective: genesis of territorial organization, evolution of territorial limits, implementation of infrastructures and socio-economic evolution of the territories, historical origins of territorial inequalities, landscape changes from history and cartography records.

Description: Study of the new youth identities in the era of globalization, with special emphasis on the impact of transnational migratory movements and on the processes of social and cultural insertion of young people.

Cultural Heritage and Local Development

Description: Cultural heritage, in addition to being protected, has become an important element in local and regional development. The aim is to analyze, from a very broad perspective, the different relationships that are established between this heritage and the economic, social and cultural development of the territories.

Archaelogy, Prehistory and Acient History

Description: There are basically three lines of research in the field of Archaeology, Prehistory and Ancient History:

  1. The Protohistory of the Catalonian Western Plain in the context of the north-western Mediterranean;
  2. Prehistoric and protohistoric farming and food practices in the western Mediterranean; and
  3. The formation and development of complex societies in the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

Description: Diverse fields of knowledge associated with historical science converge in this line of research. Prehistory, Archaeology, Ancient History, Medieval History, Modern History, American History, Economic History, Contemporary History plus other subjects connected with historiographic sciences and techniques are all of them endowed with the capacity to carry out an exploration of the present via the analysis of the past. All these areas are equally concerned with the management and conservation of historical and cultural heritage, as well as the processes of construction of collective memory which nowadays society needs in its attempt to achieve a sense of social cohesion.

Development and International Cooperation

Description: The aim of this line of research is to problematize development as an object of study, analyze its paradigmatic trajectory and offer a vision as broad and detailed as possible of the institutional apparatus of development. The research is focused on the study of verifiable relationships between public authorities, politics and collective action (social movements) in development contexts.

History of Art

Description: The diverse research lines that History of Art offers can definitely lead to the writing of an excellent PhD. The University of Lleida (UdL) prioritizes the ones described hereafter, which range from any artistic manifestation, either formal or conceptual, developed in late Antiquity, Romanesque, Gothic, Rennaissance, Baroque, Twentieth-century to the artistic manifestations of the contemporary times. These lines of research are inclusive enough to carry out and successfully finish a good acadèmic exercise that guarantees scientific competence.

Description: This line of research aims to study four areas of Catalan and Occitan philology, two related to language and two to literature: on the one hand, Linguistic Heritage and Applied Catalan Linguistics, and on the other, Literary Heritage and Critical Studies. Filologia Francesa

  • French and Francophone Literature. It focuses on research on literatures in French, literary movements, authors, works; it explores the relationship between context and readership and examines the ethic and aesthetic values of the literary act.
  • Comparative French Literature and Francophone Literatures. It consists of the analysis of the relationships between francophone literatures with Catalan and/or Spanish literature. It is configured around a transnational and intercultural perspective. It also refers to the relationships between literature and critical thinking, or between literature and other artistic manifestations.
  • Culture and Society in French and French-Speaking Countries. It examines diverse thematic approaches to cultural, literary and artistic representations from the francophone world, such as multiculturalism, plurilingualism, identity constructions, postcolonial literatures, de-territorialized literatures, immigrant literatures and women’s writing.
  • Literary Theory and Humanist Theory in the Franchophone World. It includes research related to theoretical constructions and interpretation methodologies of French or francophone origin.
  • Teaching of French as a Foreign Language. It focuses on the teaching of French as a foreign language and as a specialization language as applied to diverse areas such as language acquisition –both native and non-native-, bilingualism, multilingualism, the teaching of communicative, cultural, intercultural and literary competences and/or the teaching of specialization languages (lexicology, lexicography and multilingual terminology)
  • French Linguistics. This line of research encompasses all the specific manifestations and all the disciplines related to the linguistic study of the French language, from both a diachronic and synchronic perspective.

Spanish Philology

History of the Spanish Language

Description:This line of research explores the Spanish Language as a system that is constituted by change and survives thanks to change. The transformation process is analysed from archival documentation from all historical epochs. It must be stressed that both onomastics and toponymy are considered sources of documentation.

Study of the Relationship among Language, Critical Thinking, Culture and Society

Description: This line of research is aimed at determining the impact that the social and cultural traits of Spanish-speaking communities have on the structure and use of the Spanish language, and viceversa. It also explores the mutually dependent relationship between language and critical thinking.

Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language and as a Second Language

Description: This line of research aims to (1) broaden our knowledge about the process of acquisition of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture in a teaching-learning context of foreign languages or second languages, including the teaching to immigrants; (2) analyse the intercultural relationships in this context and (3) construct didactic strategies.

Lesbian, Gay, Trans and Queer Studies

Description: This line of research is aimed at examining the cultural representation of “sexual minorities” in Spain and Spanish America throughout the centuries. The objective is to link the areas of political changes with historical evolution and artistic/literary productions in order to assess whether cultural representations can be fully valued as mirrors of social and political changes.

Classical Philology

Description: This line of research proposes the study of, as feasible Doctorate arguments, the main thematic fields that configure Greek Philology and Latin Philology, paying special attention to Classical Mythology (or comparative) and to the prosoponimia and other aspects related to the history and survival of ancient literary genres. Some sub-lines could be Greek Tragedy and Roman Comedy (or Greco-Latin Theatre, in general), Greek Hellenistic poetry, classical tradition, Classical Rhetoric and Medieval Latin Philology. Another sub-line to take into consideration is lexicography (etymological studies) and other aspects associated with both Greek and Latin Linguistics.

Translation and Interpreting


Literary translation: Analyze, study, investigate how the translation of literary works is an aesthetic operation but also an operation that approaches the thought of the Other and its culture. Perform critical type translations.

Translation and cultural fact: Analyze, study, investigate how translations, especially humanistic and social (journalism, for example, in its many aspects) reveal a clear and precise panorama about the history of a country's culture, in a given moment.

Perceptions of multiculturalism in two literary works: The student would choose two literary works, belonging to different writers and geographically distant but that would study (more or less in the same period) the same topic or aspect.

Translation and historical fact: analyze, study, investigate how translations of the same humanistic work (translations that change over time) contribute to understanding the cultural, aesthetic and historical history of a linguistic area.
